If you like Settlers and Seafarers of Catan you might also like the sci-fi version, Starfarers of Catan. I also highly recommend Dominion. Fluxx is a fun card game that you might also enjoy. I also highly recommend the game Betrayal at House on the Hill, but it is out of print and in high demand, so it is kind of pricey.

Welcome to the world of Euro Games, also known as Designer Games(because the name of the designer is on the box). There are a ton of great games out there, and for once I can suggest the more complex games because you’re familiar with Settlers and things like complexity won’t scare you off.

Puerto Rico: This is one of the most popular and best rated games in the Designer Games Hobby. It’s a worker placement game where you place people on buildings and they produce goods and then you sell them to buy more buildings to make more goods. And as boring as I made that sound, it’s amazing. It was the top game on Board Game Geek for years, and was only beaten out by Agricola.

Agricola: I might as well mention this too, it’s the current top rated game(I think) on Board Game Geek. BGG is the best English language Board Game site, it’s both a database and a community for gamers. You might notice I haven’t discussed the game much, that’s because I haven’t played it. It’s a farming game, and there’s a lot of planning that you can do each turn, and you have to make sure you can feed your family as the game goes on, but other than that I don’t know much about it. It’s highly rated though and I have only heard one or two negative comments about it.

Mission: Red Planet is one of my favorites. It has elements of worker placement, but also screws around with turn order. The idea behind the game is that players are sending astronauts to colonize Mars in 1886. Each player secretly chooses a role each round that allows them to do certain things, and each role is numbered, then you play the roles in the order of their numbers. So sometimes your plan to get all your astronauts onto the same ship is messed up when another player fills that ship before it’s your turn. It’s really fun and the theme and art are amazing.

Dominion is also a great game. It’s like a Collectible Card Game, except you build your deck as you play. The game comes with a ton of cards, over 500 I think, and those are broken down into 25 different card types, and each game you use 10 card types per game, so you can switch out different cards and make a completely different game type each time. You can have a game with lots of player attacks on each other or a game with very little aggressive playing. It’s amazing how deep a game they were able to make out of a bunch of cards.

There are a ton more games out there that are great, it’s almost impossible to make even this list, as I keep thinking of more things to add, but I don’t want to bog you down with every choice, so I’ve basically listed my favorites, and Agricola which I haven’t played yet. The links below go to the BGG pages for the games that I’ve listed above. Happy Gaming.

LOTS of games, far too many to list. Go to the funagain website and check out current and past Games 100 lists for some of the best games in many categories. Then check out the games themselves (most have reviews) and see what interests you. Boardgamegeek is indeed an excellent website for all kinds of game info, but its encyclopedic nature can be overwhelming.
