Usually I’ll do one of three things. One, try to get a bunch of grain and ore so I can build cities right away. This can then lead to drawing a bunch of cards later on which can give me the inside track at the Largest Army and possibly a VP card or two (and the soilders can beat the robber away from your hexes). Two, try to get a bunch of brick and wood. This will give me lots of settlements and the inside track on the Longest Road. Three, get a lot of sheep (since no one else seems to want sheep badly)and the sheep port right away. Then I do some port trading for whatever I want. Generally I’ll try to do the first strategy whenever I can (if no else is trying to get the best ore and wheat)and concentrate on cities first, because cities will increase your production later on and drawing cards won’t.
I don’t think there are any unique strategies left with Catan. I was once told by someone who consistently won tournaments that grain was the key, all other things being equal. I haven’t necessarily found that to be true, but it seemed to work for him (unless he was lying to avoid giving away his real strategy). I find that a lot of people put their cities on their best spots, but I tend to avoid that because they then attract the robber.
